My Experience as an Energy Ambassador

Written by: Stephanie Diaz

My name is Stephanie Diaz and I am a Senior at Bell Gardens High School. I am also part of the G.R.E.E.N pathway in my school, which is how I found out about the MUSD Energy Ambassador Program. I thought that being part of the MUSD Energy Ambassador Program was the perfect opportunity to learn about energy conservation and how to help my community save energy at home.

As a MUSD Energy Ambassador, I learn a new set of skills every time I interact with other students in the program and residents from both Bell Gardens and Montebello. I got to experience several job positions being in the program. I first started on the Marketing Team and learned how to catch the viewers’ eye when making an advertisement. My fellow Energy Ambassador and I created a post card that included vivid colors to catch the person’s attention when receiving their mail.

Second, I was on the Consultation Team that consisted of going to resident’s homes and discussing ways to reduce energy usage in their homes. By being on the Consultation Team, I learned that by unplugging all devices that are not in use, you save a lot of money and energy in the long run. That is a habit that will forever stay with me and save me money when I pay my utility bills in the future.

Lastly, I am currently on the Community Outreach Team. On the Community Outreach Team, I get to attend public events and promote the MUSD Energy Ambassador program. While promoting what the program does for both communities, I get to interact with the residents and provide them with as much information I can, I try to get the residents to sign up for our FREE in-home consultations, and I also give the residents flyers that include ways to save energy with big appliances in their homes such as: washers, dryers, televisions, microwaves, etc.

So far what I have loved about the MUSD Energy Ambassador Program is that I get to socialize and meet new people. Verbal skills are something that I have never had a problem with, and by being in this internship, I get to improve my verbal skills in every public opportunity I get to attend. Another reason why I am glad I joined this program is that it provides me with experience for future resumes in the field I want to major in.

Overall, the MUSD Energy Ambassador program has been a great program in both the communities of Bell Gardens and Montebello. As the enrichment of the program continues, you can learn more about the program by:
