Energy Guide: save energy and money with your washing machine!
What you don’t know can’t hurt you but, it will hurt your wallet. Many residents aren’t aware of their laundry habits that waste energy and cause them to waste more money overall. Here are some tips on how to be more energy conscious.
- Wash with cold water. Cold water is gentler on your clothes and allows colors to stay vibrant longer. Also, since energy is not needed to heat the water, much less energy is needed!
- Always run full loads. Full loads mean that less loads are done overall.
- Using a high spin cycle. This will get clothes as dry as possible before placing them into the dryer.
- Avoid washing machines with agitators as they hold fewer clothes and increase water usage thus wasting more energy.
If you’re in the market for a new washing machine, consider buying a top or front loader with the Energy Star logo as they are more energy efficient. On average they can save you around 25% more energy and 33% in water usage. They also hold more clothes which means fewer loads and less water and energy wastage.
Some energy providers charge residents more when using appliances during peak hours. Try washing before 4 pm and after 7 am during the summer season.
